Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan

Executive Summary

DeLonghi Australia presents its five year Action Plan prepared in accordance with the new Australian Packaging Covenant (APC). This document also outlines how DeLonghi intends to implement the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG). DeLonghi was also a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) from 2005.

DeLonghi Australia is a sales subsidiary of DeLonghi S.p.A, an Italian company that imports and distributes domestic appliances. DeLonghi dominates market segments in the following categories:

  • Fixed and Portable Heating
  • Air Conditioning and Air Treatment
  • Fully Automatic Coffee Machines
  • Food Preparation and Cooking
  • Home Cleaning and Ironing

All DeLonghi products are fully manufactured and designed abroad so although DeLonghi Australia can suggest improvements to packaging, overall control of changes that could be made to initial packaging of DeLonghi products lies primarily with the DeLonghi head office in Italy. Notwithstanding this, DeLonghi is currently committed to a range of existing and future actions that are aligned with objectives of the APC.

DeLonghi Australia intends to formalise and further develop the packaging assessment process utilising environmental criteria for our refurbished/repackaged and "seconds"/repackaged products currently adhered to by a group of environmentally-conscious team members.

We also intend to conduct a rationalisation of the packaging used for spare parts orders. This process will consider the "best fit" packaging for the stock and order types, the unpredictable nature of order types and product demand, the most environmentally-friendly and cost-effective "void fill" option, and packaging reduction through order consolidation.

Through collaboration with our waste management contractors, DeLonghi Australia is in the process of developing a comprehensive waste management plan for our Prestons warehouse. In the latter part of the period of this Action Plan, DeLonghi Australia will investigate the use of reverse logistics to improve management of inventory and waste generation at the Prestons warehouse.

DeLonghi's head office in Italy operates an environmental management system that is externally certified to ISO14001. We are committed to adopting this system in the future, and will conduct a gap analysis to identify what needs to be done to achieve this goal.

DeLonghi Australia aims to use the actions detailed in this Action Plan as a framework under which to organise and drive efforts to improve packaging selection and waste management for refurbished 5and "seconds" products in Australia, and help inform packaging design processes at DeLonghi's head office in Italy.
