Varieties of Coffee

Coffee is available in a variety of different forms to suit different coffee machines and coffee making preferences. It all starts with the coffee bean. Click on the links below to discover more.

Coffee Beans

Baristas know that using fresh coffee beans and grinding them fresh for every cup delivers the perfect coffee taste. Beans also retain their freshness for longer than pre-ground coffee.

There are three major varieties of coffee: the Robusta, Arabica, and the Blended types.

Several other varieties of coffee exist nowadays. All of these varieties are prepared from the blends, which are mixed with other less expensive varieties to provide a new taste and flavour.

Arabica
These plants are considered a high quality bean and produce very flavourful and aromatic coffee. Grown best in altitudes beyond 3,000 feet above sea level, Arabica plants demand more rigid growing requirements and are more expensive.

Low in caffeine, low in acidity and high in flavour and aroma.
Robusta
Less flavourful and less aromatic than Arabica, Robusta are not usually used in gourmet coffee roasts, but as a ‘filler’ bean for instant coffees in order to keep down roasters’ costs.

Robusta has twice the caffeine of Arabica and is often responsible for a thicker ‘crema’ (hazelnut foam) to the top of an espresso.
Blending
Blending varieties of coffee for the ultimate taste requires combining those beans that complement one another, with characteristics that enhance the final product.

Ground Coffee
Grinding coffee beans
Coffee can be bought as pre-ground or as whole beans. Beans stay fresher for longer and grinding beans fresh always makes the best coffee.
Bean to Cup
For the perfect flavour, a bean to cup grinds fresh beans automatically for every cup.
Grinders
For all other coffee machines (excluding capsule and pod) buy a coffee grinder to tailor the perfect flavour.
Ground coffee coarseness
This is crucial to the flavour, aroma and quality of the coffee. Buy or grind the coarseness of coffee to your preference of taste:
A finer setting will bring out more flavour and aroma, but may also be more bitter. A coarser setting will make a milder drink.
Espresso-based coffees*
Fine grind to extract intense coffee flavours and aromas in 20 seconds to extract an espresso with plenty of crema.

Strong. Mixes well with milk.
Percolator coffee
Medium grind to allow the coffee to infuse into the water without becoming too bitter.

Medium flavour and aroma.
Drip / filter coffee
Coarse grind to allow water under little pressure to filter through slowly and brew gradually.

A smooth, mild flavour and aroma.

*Most coffee shop classics start with an espresso (or two): Macchiato, Cappuccino, Latte, Flat white, Americano.

Storing coffee
The aroma and flavour of coffee degrades when exposed to moist air and sunlight.
Do:
Beans keep longer than ground coffee, so only grind what you need.

Coffee should be stored in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature.
Don't:
Put coffee in the fridge or freezer as when it is exposed to ambient air condensation will form on the cold coffee and moisture will degrade the coffee faster.

Coffee Roasts

There are different roast levels for the common types of ground coffee.

Light roast
Lighter taste and a higher acidity level.
Medium roast
Called the “classic roast” for many ground coffee brands, has a sweeter taste that is a bit stronger and has a near perfect acid and aroma blend.
Dark roast
A distinguishing strength where you can easily taste the roasted flavour of the bean.

Ground coffee is also available in specialty roasts:

French roasts
Typically a lot darker and stronger, although they are not the strongest roasts available. These types of ground coffee are often chosen for coffee shops that make espresso.
Italian roast
A bit stronger and darker than the French roast, these roasts are frequently chosen for espressos as well. The difference is in the taste that results from the dark roast; there is more of a roasted flavour.
Spanish roast
Ground coffee is the darkest roast available. It is also the strongest flavour available, with the flavour having a bit of a bitter taste. The resulting coffee will be almost black in colour and have a charcoal-ish taste and aroma.

Coffee Capsules
What are coffee capsules
Hidden inside each Nespresso capsule are some of the finest coffees in the world, which have been blended, roasted and ground with the utmost skill by coffee experts. The sealed aluminium capsule preserves aroma and flavour until the moment it is used to make coffee.

Used capsules can be collected by Nespresso with each new delivery of capsules so that old capsules can be infinitely recycled.
How do coffee capsules work?
For use in De’Longhi Nespresso machines, one capsule is inserted into the machine per drink. A simple lever is used to pierce one end of the capsule within the machine. Activate the button to deliver coffee.

A powerful 19 Bar pressure pump forces hot water into the capsule, pre-brewing the coffee. As the pressure builds up in the capsule the other end is pierced at precisely the right pressure to extract the perfect coffee, and deliver directly to your cup.

Once delivery is finished and another coffee is inserted, the used capsule is automatically dropped into a container to be emptied at a convenient time.
Why choose coffee capsules?
Each single-use Nespresso capsule is guaranteed to keep the utmost freshness of the coffee for up to twelve months. With a guaranteed consistency of results Nespresso capsules are simple, clean and fuss-free to use.

Coffee Pods
What are coffee pods
There are predominantly two forms of pods, each hermetically seal the coffee from the point they are roasted, ground and dosed to maintain the coffee freshness. They are single-use only.
Nescafé Dolce Gusto
Encapsulates coffee in a small plastic pod and only fits dedicated (Nescafé Dolce Gusto) machines. These pods not only come with a variety of black coffee drinks (including Espresso and Americano) but also a variety of white coffee drinks (including Latte and Cappuccino).

Being a truly versatile pod system, there are other hot and cold drink options, such Choccocino, Chai Tea Latte, and Nestea.
Easy Serving Espresso pods
ESE: Easy Serving Espresso pods are analogous to a coffee teabag only with tightly packed coffee. These are often individually packed in a sachet. They are compatible with most traditional pump espresso machines.
How do coffee pods work?
For both Nescafé Dolce Gusto and ESE pods, one pod is inserted into the machine each time; once fitted, activate the button or lever to deliver the coffee. To make some Nescafé Dolce Gusto drink types, up to two pods may be used consecutively.

A powerful 15 Bar pressure pump forces hot water through the pod, delivering the coffee directly into your cup. Within Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine, the plastic pod is pierced at exactly the right pressure to deliver the perfect cup of coffee.
Why choose coffee pods?
Each single-use pod is guaranteed to keep the utmost freshness of the coffee for up to twelve months.
Pods help to deliver consistency of results and are simple, clean and fuss-free to use.

Nescafé Dolce Gusto: With over 25 drinks varieties, you have plenty to choose from. With its non coffee drink options, there is a drink to suit every member of the family. Pods are available in your local supermarket. Find out more
