  • How do I set the water hardness?

Setting the water hardness is an important step for your new bean to cup machine. It will ensure the descale warning correctly identifies when you require a descale.

Please use the water hardness strip supplied with your machine.

Please see the following tutorial for your Magnifica ESAM4200 machine:

For other models please see our tutorial video YouTube site at http://www.youtube.com/user/delonghihowtouk

  • My machine is buzzing loudly and not dispensing water. What can I do?

If you hear a loud buzzing noise, or the steam light or water light is showing and the tank is full, there may be a small amount of air in the system. Please carry out these simple steps:

    • Turn the machine on.
    • Fill the water tank.
    • Place a cup underneath the traditional frother, or attach the hot water spout if you have an automatic machine.
    • Open the steam valve fully for around 30 seconds until water comes out of the frother or press the hot water button on automatic machines. Do not be alarmed if the machine buzzes loudly.
    • Warning: Steam and hot water are delivered.
    • Close the steam valve fully.
    • The warning lights will now go out and the coffee lights will blink to show the machine is pre-warming.
    • The coffee lights will stop blinking after a short time.
    • You are now ready to make coffee.

  • My coffee is too weak. How can I improve it?

There are several factors that can affect  the taste. Please check these suggestions to see if they help:

    • You may be adding too much water. The perfect espresso (single shot) is around 30ml to 40ml of liquid. Adding water results in an Americano type coffee. It may be advisable to use two shots of espresso in a larger cup. Coffee recipes can be found at www.seriousaboutcoffee.com.
    • The type of coffee can affect strength. De'Longhi would recommend a good espresso coffee. Origin and blend (i.e. whether it is robusta or arabica), and the darkness of the roast affect strength.
    • The grind may be too coarse. The grind can be decreased one notch at a time during the grinding process.
    • Try increasing the strength of coffee on your machine settings which will increase the amount of coffee during the grinding process.
  • How do I descale my Bean to Cup machine?

Descaling is an important part of caring for your bean to cup machine, and the frequency needed will depend on the water hardness in your area. Please follow the step by step instructions below when your machine indicates a descale is required:

    • Add De’Longhi Descaler to the tank, dilute to approximately 1ltr of water, fit the tank.
    • Press and hold the descale button until either the cup lights go out or start flashing along with the steam light.  If your machine has an electronic display select the descale option.
    • Place a receptacle with a capacity of 1.5 litres under the manual frother.
    • Open the steam valve fully.
    • The machine will start descaling. This process will pause and restart over a period of 20 to 30 minutes.
    • When the ‘Fill Tank’ light or message shows turn the steam dial to the off position.
    • Rinse the tank out and then fill with fresh water.
    • Fit the tank
    • Empty and replace the receptacle.
    • Open the steam valve fully again.
    • Once the rinse cycle has finished close the steam dial. Remove the tank and fill with fresh water.
    • The descale light will go out and the machine is now ready to make coffee.

De’Longhi Descaling fluid and other cleaning accessories are available from De’Longhi Spares.

  • My infuser is stuck. What can I do?

This may happen as a result of power interruption. The infuser can only be removed if the correct shut-down sequence has been followed when the machine is turned off. Always switch the machine off by the power button on the front of the machine and allow the process to terminate.

If you are unable to remove the infuser do not force it.

    • Turn the machine back on and wait for the full start up sequence to complete.
    • Shut the machine down by the power button on the front of the machine.
    • Wait for the shut-down sequence to complete.
    • You should now be able to remove the infuser with ease.

For further assistance please see our tutorial videos below:

If your infuser can be accessed at the front of your machine:

If your infuser can be accessed from the side of your machine:

  • I cannot insert my drip tray. What can I do?

The machine should always be shut down correctly using the power button at the front of the machine before removing sections for cleaning. Once the machine has completed the shutdown process it is safe to switch off the power at the wall.

If the shutdown process has not been fully completed the infuser will be in the wrong position. Please carry out the following recommendations to rectify this problem:

    • With the machine switched on take the grounds container (the container where used coffee is collected) and insert it in its correct position in the machine without the full drip tray assembly. You may need to lift it slightly to get it to insert fully in its slot.
    • Once the door is closed turn the machine on. You should hear the infuser mechanism resetting. Wait for this to stop.
    • Turn the machine off by the power button at the front of the machine. Wait for the shutdown process to complete fully and all lights to go out. The machine may do a rinse at this point.
    • You can now turn the machine off at the wall. When you open the service door the infuser will now be in the correct position and you can replace the drip tray.

To avoid this happening again please always ensure the machine is correctly powered down using the button on the front of your machine before removal of the infuser or drip tray.

For further assistance please see our tutorial video below:

  • The general alarm light is showing on my machine. What can I do?

If your machine displays a general alarm message or a warning light indicated by a red exclamation mark please carry out the following steps:

    • Switch the machine off using the power button on the front of your bean to cup machine, and wait for the shutdown process to complete fully before the next step.
    • Turn the machine off at the wall.
    • Open the service door.
    • Remove the drip tray and grounds container.
    • Remove the brewing unit (infuser) by squeezing the two red buttons either side of the ‘Push’ button. Pull gently. If the infuser will not freely come out do not force it.
    • Clean the infuser using warm water once removed.
    • With the infuser still out of the machine, clean the inside of the machine thoroughly. Vacuum the inside of your machine to ensure all grinds are removed. Pay particular attention to the area behind the grounds container.
    • Replace the infuser.
    • Clean the drip tray and grounds container thoroughly.
    • Place the grounds container on the drip tray and slide the tray back into the machine.
    • Switch the machine on at the wall, and then press the power button.
    • The general alarm light should no longer be showing.
  • I descaled my machine, but the descale light has not gone out. Why has this happened?

The descale process was not recognised by your machine. A process may have been skipped or carried out too quickly. Assuming you have already run descaler through the machine please carry out the following steps to resolve this*.

    • Ensure the tank contains at least two inches of water.
    • Press and hold the descale button for a slow five seconds. The coffee lights will now flash to say you are no longer able to make coffee. Your machine is now in descale mode.
    • Place a jug underneath your steam valve and open the steam valve FULLY.
    • The machine will stop when the tank is empty.
    • Close the steam valve.
    • Remove your water tank and add at least two inches of water again. Ensure the tank is full. Place it back into the machine.
    • Press the Descale button once and then open the steam valve fully again.
    • This time the water will run straight through the machine without pause.
    • Once the tank is completely empty, refill it again and you are ready to make coffee once again. The descale light will go out.

*IMPORTANT: Only use this solution when you have descaled your machine.  Not descaling your machine regularly can result in breakdown of the appliance.  If you do not descale your machine regularly your product warranty may become invalid.

Descaling your bean to cup machine is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your machine and ensure longevity of your product.
